How to Participate

The National Surf League’s goal is to encourage student/athletes to stay in school by participating in the NSL’s High School team surfing tournament (Red Bull Riders Cup)

Eligibility

Eligibility to participate in The NSL High School League is based around commonly accepted state governing body rules for high school team athletic participation.  (CIF – California Interscholastic Federation, FHSAA – Florida High School Athletic Association, NJSIAA – New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association)

  1. All players must be currently enrolled full-time student
  2. All players must have a current G.P.A of 2.0 or higher.

Independent Study/Home School Programs

Players enrolled in independent study or home school programs are eligible to participate under the following criteria:

  1. Player is enrolled in independent study/home school program that is approved by the school district in which the player resides. 
  2. Player is only allowed to surf for school team that would normally be assigned to under the district school attendance zoning policies. 
  3. Students attending a charter school full time that does not offer PE classes may participate with the team at the school of their residence. The NSL must be notified of any studnet enrolling under this rule. 

How to Form a Team

The NSL recognizes that individuals/groups wishing to compete in the NSL’s High School Cup may attend High Schools that do not have an organized surf team or club.  These affected individuals/groups may form their own team to compete in the High School tournament under the following criteria:

  1. School does not have existing surf team or club
  2. Each athlete MUST be full-time student at respective High School
  3. Each athlete provide proof of good academic standing (min 2.0 GPA)
  4. Each individual provide written permission from parent/guardian
  5. Team must have a coach (Adult to be the team point of contact)
  6. All teams formed under this rule are subject to approval by the NSL board of directors

Coach Discretion

  1. Coaches have the sole discretion to pick the roster for their NSL High School Cup team.
  2. Coaches are encouraged to hold open tryouts for spots on their NSL High School Cup team
