Upper Trestles Pumps Out Epic Surf for Final Day of Action

The best high school surf teams in the nation gathered this past weekend at Upper Trestles for the 5^th annual National Surf League (NSL) High School Cup National Championship featuring the “Game” format. With a new south swell delivering 3-4 foot sets all day and glassy conditions, the Huntington Beach High Oilers took home their first ever NSL High School Cup national title by out dueling the San Dieguito Academy Mustangs in a display of some of the most progressive and innovative surfing ever seen in amateur competition as judged by a highly qualified judging crew of professional surfers.

Huntington Beach earned their way into the final game with a decisive win over defending champion Mira Costa High School in the quarterfinals and taking down Newport Harbor High in the semi-finals. San Dieguito academy advanced to the final with a win over Malibu High in the quarterfinals and surviving a late surge from San Clemente High in the second semi-final. This setup a rematch of the 2007 High School Cup final game in which San Dieguito took the national title over Huntington Beach.

The coin toss was won by San Dieguito Academy and Mustang coaches Oly Norris and Jeremy Sherwin decided to surf in the bottom of each period, sending out Huntington Beach High coached by Andy Verdone into the water first. HB High Oilers starters Christian Saenz, Kyle McGeary, Evan Kane and Derek Peters opened the game with all scoring 5 points and above and posted a solid total period score of 23 points.

San Dieguito Academy opened the bottom of the first period with a flurry of set waves. Mustang starters including JD Lewis, Derrick Disney, Zane Norman, and Austin Rowe all dropped solid scores of 5.5 and above. JD Lewis caught a set wave from the top of the Uppers line-up and ripped the bag out of the wave with a series of carves and fins-free re-entries complete with a claim back to the ecstatic Mustang fans on the beach. Lewis’ wave score of 8 points pushed San Dieguito to a 26-point total and a three-point lead without calling a single timeout.

The Oilers answered back in the top of the second in a major way with Christian Saenz dropping a 6.5 and Jack Boyes getting substituted in on a wide peak set wave for a 5.5. Then the set of the entire 2-day event appeared on the horizon and Derek Peters scratched his way outside into position and on to the biggest wave of the day. Peters launched into a series of stylish bottom turns and radical off-the-tops all the way down the point and finished with a double-fist pump claim to the Huntington Beach dugout for a 9.5 wave score – the highest of the event. But the Oilers were not done yet. Kyle McGeary took off the next wave and launched a full rotation air 360 for an 8.0 wave score and earning the Game’s Most Radical Maneuver. Huntington finished the period with a huge score of 29.5 points.

The Mustangs looked to answer the Oiler charge in the bottom of the second, however the ocean stopped cooperating with the team and big scorers JD Lewis and Derrick Disney were only able to drop scores of 4 and 5 points respectfully. Coaches Norris and Sherwin used three timeouts in the period to try and get the rhythm of the ocean on their side. Zane Norman scored a 6.0 with some clean backside snaps and Matt Lewis came off the bench to score a 5.0. With no scores in the excellent range, San Dieguito finished the period with just 20 points and behind by 6.5 points.

Huntington solidified their lead in the top of the third with a Christian Saenz scoring a 6.5 with a series of quick backside snaps on a mid-range set wave. Peters dropped a 6.0 wave score with McGeary and Evan Kane both dropping 5.0 scores for a 22.5 total period score and 75 points total Game score, putting the pressure on the Mustangs to deliver in the bottom of the 3^rd and final period.

To win the game, San Dieguito Academy would need to score 29.5 points in the bottom of the final period. Derrick Disney did his part dropping a 7.0 on an inside running right with a series of Parko-esque stylish power snaps. Lewis and Norman each scored 6.5’s, but the team needed to average 7.5 wave scores to take the win and were left hoping for a flurry of waves similar to Huntington’s pivotal 2^nd period. With no timeouts remaining and no set waves on the horizon the Mustang players could only sit in the lineup as the clock counted down to zero. Final score: Huntington – 75, San Dieguito – 68.

“We had a huge 2^nd period and that made the difference for us,” commented Huntington Beach High coach Andy Verdone, still dripping wet after receiving an ice bucket shower from his team. “The Game format is unreal – no hassling, no fighting, the kids are out there performing for their teammates, there is no other format like it.”

“I was in perfect position and was super stoked after the wave because I felt like it put our team back into the Game,” said Game MVP Derrick Peters on his 9.5 wave score in the second period. “I like the Game format better, everyone gets hyped up and it raises the performance level.”

The National Surf League’s staff of professional surfers including head judge Austin Ware, Micah Byrne, Chris Abad, Kyle Knox and CT Taylor judged the Games.

Huntington Beach High Gets Sweet Revenge Over Rival Newport Harbor High

The National Surf League (NSL) hosted the NSL High School Cup Orange County Regional in fun 2-4 foot surf at Goldenwest Street in Huntington Beach, CA.

Participating surf teams from Edison High, San Clemente High, Huntington Beach High and Newport Harbor battled for a spot in the High School Cup Championships using the NSL’s innovative Game format.

The final game came down to a rematch of the 2009 regional final between Huntington Beach High School and defending champion Newport Harbor High School.

The Huntington Beach High Oilers lead by coach Andy Verdone won the coin toss and decided to surf in the bottom half of each period, sending out the Ryan Simmons-lead Newport Harbor High Navigators into the water first.

A flurry of south-swell bombs opened the top of the first period. Newport showed their depth with substitutes Blake Davis and Bobby Okvist answering the call from coach Simmons by dropping 5.0 and 7.5 scores respectfully. Jared Cassidy caught a mid-range set wave and weaved his way into an overhead hollow shore break section, getting completely covered and coming out sending the Newport dugout and fans into a frenzy. Cassidy’s tube ride earned him a 7.0 and the Navigators finished the opening period with 25 points.

The long lulls in-between sets contributed to a slow start for Huntington in the bottom of the first period. Each team has five timeouts to use in the Game to wait out these lulls, however Coach Verdone elected to keep the timeouts in his pocket. Christian Saenz caught a long set wave and caved his way through the shore break finishing with fins-free blast and a 6.5. Towards the end of the period, Kyle McGeary took off on a wedging right and launched a huge torqued-out air 360 and landed it for an 8.0 and earning the Game’s “Most Radical Maneuver” from the judging panel of professional surfers. The Oilers responded to the Navigators opening period and finished with 24.5 points and all five timeouts remaining.

Newport came out strong again in the top of the second period with Jared Cassidy finding the tube again in the shore break to score another 7-point ride. Blake Davis was substituted in to score a 6.0 contributing to an overall period score of 22 points for the Navigators.

Derek Peters started strong for Huntington’s half of the second period with a series of powerful backside snaps from the outside all the way through the shore break for a 6.5 score. Other Huntington starters pulled together just average scores, bringing their period total up to 20 points. Coach Verdone called two timeouts in the last minute of the period to improve the low scores, but nothing came and the Oilers were left trailing after two periods by 2.5 points.

The incoming tide and inconsistent south swell caused havoc for the top of Newport’s final period. Three of the four Navigator starters scored only in the 4-point range, with Jarred Cassidy looking for a score in the shifting lineup. Coach Simmons called his final timeout with 3:22 remaining to give Cassidy, who scored 7-point rides in the two previous periods the opportunity for a big score. The timeout expired and regulation time resumed counting down with no forth score, Substitute Blake Davis caught a right-hander to the north, however coach Simmons did not call him in and the score of 5 points did not count. Time expired and Newport finished the final period with a disappointing 12.5 points.

With the shocking turn to the Game, Huntington Beach High only needed 15.5 points to win the Game in the bottom of the final period. Christian Saenz and Derek Peters both dropped 5-point rides with Kyle McGeary and Evan Kane sealing the Game and trip to the championships for Huntington Beach with six and a half minutes remaining on the clock.

Huntington Beach High School will now move on the NSL High School Cup National Championships at Upper Trestles on June 12^th and 13^th.

San Dieguito Academy Repeats As High School Cup Regional Champs

The National Surf League (NSL) in association with Surfin Fire hosted the NSL High School Cup San Diego Regional at D Street in Encinitas, CA under sunny skies and 2-foot surf.

High School surf teams from La Costa Canyon High, Torrey Pines High, San Dieguito Academy, Carlsbad High and Point Loma High battled for the regional title and a spot in the High School Cup Championship at Upper Trestles.

Game one saw both Carlsbad High and Torrey Pines surf strong throughout the 3-period Game. Torrey Pines opened with an early lead, but couldn’t hold on thanks to inconsistent surf and an Ill-timed substitution call and Carlsbad High advanced to the Final.

Game two saw La Costa Canyon participate for the first time in the Game format against the experienced Point Loma High School. After a shaky low-scoring first period, La Costa Canyon pulled to within striking distance in the bottom of the third period, needing just 3 points to take the win in the dying minutes, but couldn’t close the gap. Point Loma took the win with Josh Morse and Joe Diamond helping to keep the team in the lead throughout the Game.

The next day saw continued small surf for the Game between defending regional champion and runner-up at last years national championship San Dieguito Academy and Point Loma High School. After a first period separated by one point, SDA posted a 22-point second period on the strength of scores from Zane Norman and JD Lewis. Point Loma in a combination of lack of waves, poor positioning and strategy was only able to post one scoring ride of 3 points from Joe Diamond and zeros from the other three starters, which sealed Point Loma’s fate and gave San Dieguito the win.

The final was a match-up of San Dieguito Academy and longtime rival Carlsbad High School. This was the forth year in a row the two teams have met in the regional final with San Dieguito taking two out of the last three match-ups.

San Dieguito won the coin toss and elected to surf in the bottom of each period, sending Carlsbad into the water first. A determined Austin Ganz from Carlsbad opened the period with a fins free blast in the shore break earning 5 points for one maneuver. Carlsbad however suffered from lack of waves with scoring potential and finished the period with 16 total points.

San Dieguito Academy answered in the bottom of the first with a balanced attack from starters JD Lewis, Derrick Disney, Zane Norman and Austin Rowe all contributing to a 21-point period score and a 5 point lead.

Carlsbad came out in the top of the second with a strong score from Dom Dipietro, but other starters were not able to back him up and finished again with a 16-point total score.

The balanced attack from the San Dieguito again put up strong score in the top of the second, adding to their lead with a 23 point total score and a commanding 12 point lead, which they held on to eventually take the win in the bottom of the third period with 8:57 remaining on the clock.

“The kids look forward to this event every year and we are stoked to be back in the championships,” said San Dieguito Academy head coach Oly Norris. “Hopefully we can do one place better than last year”, added coach Norris referring to their runner-up finish in the 2009 national championships.

San Dieguito Academy High School will now move on the NSL High School Cup National Championships at Upper Trestles on June 12^th and 13^th.

The NSL High School Cup next travels north to Huntington Beach, CA on June 2^nd and 3^rd for the Orange County Regional Championship.

Ocean City Wins High School Cup NJ Regional

After an extended 5-day waiting period to allow for the best possible surf and weather conditions, The NSL High School Cup was greeted with excellent 2-3 foot offshore peaks at 1^st street in Ocean City, New Jersey.

Participating High Schools Manasquan, Southern Regional, Middle Township and three-time defending regional champion Ocean City battled in some of the closest Games in NSL history.

Ocean City High School beat Southern Regional High School by just 1.9 points in the closely fought first semi-final, despite an 8.7 score from Southern Regional’s Conner Willem in the bottom of the third period.

The second semi-final saw Middle Township High take down Manasquan High in low-scoring nail-bitter with Middle Township winning by just 0.45 points, one of the slimmest margins of victory in NSL history.

This set up a rematch of last year’s regional final between the Middle Township High Panthers and the defending regional champion Ocean City High Red Raiders. Middle Township won the coin toss and decided to surf in the bottom half of each period, sending Ocean City to the water first in the waist to chest high surf. Ocean City High alumni and assistant coach Rob Kelly had his team fired up, but the team was only able to drop a 12.7 total period score.

Middle Township, lead by Mike Ciramella sensing the opportunity to build a lead opened the bottom of the first with a series of powerful backhand snaps from the sophomore, scoring a 6.7, cutting into Ocean City’s total first period score with just one wave. However, the other three Middle Township starters failed to find waves with scoring opportunity and the Panthers finished trailing by a half a point.

In the top of the second, Ocean City struggled with positioning for the high scoring opportunities until Sean Santiago found a clean right-hander and performed a series of clean re-entries earning a 6.7 wave score improving their period score to 15.5.

Middle Township came back again with Mike Ciramella scoring 6.3 and Austin King dropping a sold score, however the team failed to keep pace with a total period score of 13.3.

Ocean City High sent out its seniors for the top of the third with Matt Rink and Sean Santiago both dropping solid scores for the team. In the final minutes, Coaches Mark Miedema and Rob Kelly substituted in Zack Greaser and helped contribute to a final period score of 14.3 and a final Game score of 42.5. The Red Raiders looked confident in their dugout with a 17-point lead going into the Panthers half of the final period.

Middle Township went right to work for their final period with Mike Ciramella once again putting a big score on the board on a wedging right-hander, he executed a lightning fast power snap straight into a huge blow-tail re-entry on the closeout section. The combination earned Ciramella an 8.3 and the Game’s Most Radical Maneuver. This left the other three Panther starters needing just 3 point scores each to take the win.

Ocean City High’s dugout was in disbelief that Middle Township needed such small scores to take the title away. Middle ‘s Austin King thickened the plot with a 3.5 score, meaning the other two players needed to get a 2.6 each. Middle Township coach Nicole Roppoli was gripping her radio pleading with the water coach to help position the team into higher scoring waves. However, Middle Township was not able to close the gap in the end and Ocean City High School won their fourth consecutive regional title.

“It was a true team effort today”, said assistant coach Rob Kelly. “Middle Township was very talented, but I think our experience paid off today with a touch of luck”.

Ocean City High School will now move on the NSL High School Cup National Championships at Upper Trestles on June 12^thand 13^th.

The NSL High School Cup next travels to D-Street, Encinitas on May 24^th and 25^th for the San Diego Regional Championship.

Santa Cruz High Takes High School Cup Regional Title

The National Surf League in association with The Core hosted the NSL High School Cup Santa Cruz Regional on May 2, 2010 in sunny and glassy 2-4 foot waves at Santa Cruz’s Pleasure Point

The final Game was a rematch of the 2009 regional final between the Santa Cruz High School Cardinal coached by local professional surfers Joe Hudson and Matt Rockhold and the defending regional champion Aptos High School Mariners coached by Grant Hueth and HS Cup alumni Brandon Barnes and Jesse Snyder.

Aptos High won the coin toss and elected to surf in the top half of each period after considering the incoming tide’s effect on the consistency at Pleasure Point. Noah Wegrich broke the grace period with a series of solid backside snaps connecting from 1^st peak all the way through 2^nd peak for a score of 6.5. However, the remaining three Aptos players missed a couple scoring opportunities and posted below average scores. The Mariners finished the first period with a 16.5 total score.

The Santa Cruz High Cardinal immediately made their intentions clear in the bottom of the first with Pete Mueller and Shaun Burns leading the team with a 6.5 and 7.0 respectfully. All four starting players scored 5.5 and above and Santa Cruz finished the first period with a total score of 25 points and a commanding lead.

Aptos was unable to make up any ground in the second period and none of the players were able to get over 4.5 wave scores and finished the period with a disappointing 13.5. Santa Cruz High meanwhile continued to build their lead, dropping a 21-point period score on the strength of scores from Shaun Burns and John Wilson.

For Aptos to keep the Game alive in the top of the third period, the Mariners needed to score at least 16 points collectively. Wegrich, the 2009 MVP for Aptos went to work scoring a 7.0 with a series of aggressive backside snaps which got the Aptos bench cheering. Again, the young Aptos Team was unable to capitalize on other scoring opportunities and was just unable to tie the Game with a 15.5 period score, giving Santa Cruz High the win without having to surf in the bottom of the third period.

With Santa Cruz High already in the water and the victory secured, Coach Hudson instructed his team via water radio to “Go off! We want to show the teams down south what we got!” in reference to earning a trip to the NSL High School Cup National Championship at Upper Trestles. Shaun Burns received the message and on the next set wave launched into a series of vertical snaps topped with an air 360 at the end – the score: 10. The Santa Cruz High bench and crowd erupted in cheers, fist-pumps and high-fives to coaches Hudson and Rockhold. The wave earned Burns both the Most Radical Maneuver and the MVP as the teams leading scorer.

“I’m really proud of my team’s performance today”, said Santa Cruz High head coach Joe Hudson. “I haven’t seen any of the other schools, but our team has been practicing hard and I like our chances at Uppers.”

Santa Cruz High School will now move on the NSL High School Cup National Championships at Upper Trestles on June 12^th and 13^th.

The NSL High School Cup next travels to Ocean City, NJ on May 15^th and 16^th for the New Jersey Regional Championship.

2010 NSL High School Cup Kicks Off In Florida

The National Surf League kicked off the 5^th edition of its high school team surfing tournament featuring “The Game” format on April 27, 2010 with the Central Florida Regional at Sebastian Inlet in small, but clean “wedging” waves at 1^st peak.

In the final Game, it came down to a re-match of last year’s regional final between The Cocoa Beach High School Minutemen coached by John Cangianella and Nick Piette and The Satellite High School Scorpions coached by George Seguna and professional surfer Travis Beckman.

At the start of regulation time in the top of the first period, a flurry of waves hit 1^st peak and the Satellite High Scorpions full took advantage with Chris Tucker and Peter Polanski posting wave scores of 8 and 7.5 respectively with the Scorpions posting a 22.5 total 1^st period score.

Cocoa Beach answered back in the bottom of the opening period with solid scoring rides from all four starters including a 6.5 from Forest Johnson. The Minutemen finished the first period down 2 points with a total of 20.5.

Satellite High came out in the top of the second on fire with all players scoring 5 pts and above with Peter Polanski earning a 7.8 for a big front side tail blast that won him the Most Radical Maneuver Award. The Scorpions total 2^nd period score of 25.8 was the highest of the entire event.

Unfortunately for Cocoa Beach High, the incoming tide slowed the waves considerably, which perhaps left coaches Cangianella and Piette second-guessing their decision after winning coin toss to surf in the bottom half of each period. With not many waves on offer, Cocoa Beach was forced to burn through their remaining 3 of 5 timeouts and the team was only able to post a 13.7 total period score.

With the Game all but decided after the second period, Satellite posted average scores in the dwindling surf in the third period. But, it was enough to seal the victory for the third year in a row.

Satellite High School will now advance to the NSL High School Cup National Championship to be held June 12-13, 2010 at Upper Trestles in Southern California.

The National Surf League would like to thank Sebastian Inlet State Park, Terry O’Toole, CT Taylor, CJ and Damien Hobgood, participating high schools, parents, coaches and the local community for supporting high school surfing.

School of Surf – Season Two debuts Monday, December 7th at 9am on MTV2. The six-part series follows two high school surf teams as they compete and travel to the Red Bull Riders Cup National Championship. One is from Malibu High School, situated in a classic California surf town with perfect waves, sunshine year ’round, and a vibrant surf scene. The other is from the OC of the East – Ocean City, New Jersey, with its freezing winters, crowded summers and unpredictable waves. The two towns couldn’t be any more different. But the thing the two teams share is the dream of becoming pro surfers and balancing their lives with an obsession with waves. But this isn’t another reality show, this is real life.

The six episode series airs every Monday at 9am on MTV2. Set your DVR (or VCR), call in sick, or skip 1st period but don't miss it!
