Ocean City Wins Riders Cup New Jersey
The Red Bull Riders Cup literally stormed into Ocean City New Jersey this week with some of the best waves to hit the games this season.
The local favorites Ocean City High School were strong again this season and proved the team to beat from the very first game on Tuesday where they thrashed Southern Region High School very convincingly.
In the final game it was Manasquan High School that would take on last years regional champs. In clean conditions with shoulder to head high sets rolling in, Manasquan won the toss and sent Ocean City into surf. Led by last years MVP Rob Kelly, Ocean city opened the first period with some great surfing to post a score of 21.1. Many thought it would be another white wash by Ocean City, but that wasn’t to be.
After a very tight first period Ocean city held a very slim lead of 1.8 points. In the second period, Ocean City’s supreme team work and high class surfing by the Kelly brothers helped them build on their lead.
Manasquan tried desperately to bridge the gap late in the second period by taking a time-out with only 10 seconds remaining but couldn’t close the gap and trailed by 8.1 points after the second period. Not even a broken tail to Rob Kelly’s board late in the third period could slow the Ocean City team down and they again posted high scores leaving Manasquan a big total to chase in the bottom of the third period.
Manasquan put on a good show with Brendon Buckley throwing some huge aerials in an attempt to chase down the big total, but it wasn’t enough. Ocean City wins the North East Regional title and is heading to California for the national championships.
