San Dieguito Academy Moves on to National Championships
San Dieguito Academy crushed Carlsbad High 76 to 66 at the sixth stop of the Red Bull High School Cup presented by National Surf League. The three day event was held at Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach from May 29-31st. The surf stayed steady with 2-3 foot waves throughout the competition.
San Dieguito Academy coaches were Oly Norris and professional surfer Jeremy Sherwin. Former professional surfers and San Diego legends David Barr and Jake Blackburn were Carlsbad High coaches. Both team’s were fired up and ready to win the regional championship title.
Eric Snortum of San Dieguito wasted no time, dominating the waves as he scored a 7.5 in each of the three periods. Ryan Burch of San Dieguito was also strong, scoring 20.5 overall for his team. Tension was rising as Carlsbad gained on San Diegutio. San Diegutio knew they had to step it up, and they did answering right back with all four players posting a score of six or better.
Carlsbad High trailed by only 4.50 points going into the final period. San Dieguito started right where they left off with Ryan Burch and Eric Snortum both posting 7.5’s. Leading by 30 points in the final period, San Dieguito would not back down. Carlsbad High knew they needed high scores in the final period in order to take the win. Unfortunately the waves fell flat due to the incoming tide and time ran out for Carlsbad high.
The National Surf League (NSL) is a revolutionary competitive surfing organization established in 2001 by legendary pro surfer, Brad Gerlach. The NSL is dedicated to the pursuit of surfing excellence, building awareness for the sport of surfing while creating a fun competitive landscape for all types of surfers.
Twenty four schools from six different regions came out to participate in the Red Bull High School Cup. The best schools in the country will compete for the coveted national championship title. The Red Bull High School Cup Championships will take place June 18-19th at San Onofre Trails Beach in San Clemente.
