Who’s The Best? Red Bull High School Cup National Championship Coming to So-Cal
June 7, 2007 – The second annual Red Bull High School Cup National Championship event will be held at San Onofre Trails Beach on June 18th & 19th . The National Surf League presents the Red Bull High School Cup as the premiere high school surfing tournament, bringing together the best amateur surfers in each region. Only seven teams remain, six of which will compete for the National Championship title and contend for top honors. Rivalries continued to grow as the best schools in the country come out to battle for the coveted title of National Champions. Twenty four schools from six different regions have participated in the Red Bull High School Cup since its start in April. Teams have been narrowed down through regional competitions all over the United States. The 2007 Red Bull High School Cup National Champions will be invited to Mexico for three days of surfing and instruction on game strategies from the National Surf League’s Brad Gerlach and Shaun Burrell and several other pro surfers. They will be trained and coached, all in preparation to defend their title for the 2008 Red Bull High School Cup. The Red Bull High School Cup will use “The Game” format for its tournament. The format is modeled after traditional team sports like basketball and football. The Red Bull High School Cup is the first step to bringing a new outlook to the sport of surfing through the community and a structure people are familiar with. The championship format is a single elimination competition. The top two teams from each round advance until only two remain. The top two teams will compete in the finals where only one will crowned the Red Bull High School Cup National Champions. NSL founder Brad Gerlach says, “The Game creates an easier understanding of surfing as a sport. The entire game spans less than two hours, with three periods, coaches and time outs. Family and friends are encouraged to come out and show support.” The National Surf League (NSL) is a revolutionary competitive surfing organization established in 2001 by legendary pro surfer, Brad Gerlach. The NSL is dedicated to the pursuit of surfing excellence, building awareness for the sport of surfing while creating a fun competitive landscape for all types of surfers.
