SC Battle

Santa Cruz High beats Soquel High in fun surf

The Red Bull High School Cup traveled to Santa Cruz this week for its third stop at Pleasure Point.  Only two teams remained as Santa Cruz High and Soquel High battled for the win. In a close final game Santa Cruz High was victorious becoming the regional champions.

Santa Cruz High was the dominant team keeping great rhythm with the ocean, averaging a six point or above score per player in each period. Going into Soquel High’s final period, Santa Cruz held a nearly insurmountable lead. With no timeouts remaining, Soquel High could only sit as the ocean fell flat and time ran out. Santa Cruz High’s Nat Young won MVP in both games. Young posted a seven or higher score each period in the preliminaries and the finals.

Santa Cruz High was coached by pro surfers Josh Loya, Matt Rockhold and Jason “Ratboy” Collins and Soquel High was coached by pro Peter Mel. The tight Santa Cruz surfing community was also at the event to show support for their local schools. With the waves at “The Hook” flat the first two days, the event shifted to the 26th Ave beach break where the only surfable waves in town were. The conditions kicked up with 2-4 foot surf at Pleasure Point for the championships.
