Carlsbad Takes down Torrey Pines

2006 High School Cup

NSL’s High School Cup: Carlsbad High School Takes Down Torrey Pines High School 67.50 – 64.50 May 6, 2006 - In the second Game of the 2006 NSL High School Cup, the Carlsbad Lancers pulled off a huge come from behind win to retire their cross town rivals, the Torrey Pines Falcons from the event. With a solid southwest swell Ponto Jetty and the kids were on fire. Outstanding performances by players on both teams packed the Game full of action.

The Lancers were slow out of the Gates posting a mere 13 points in the first quarter. The team couldn’t quite find their position in the tricky Ponto line up and had two players come in with only 2.5’s. Meanwhile the Falcons took advantage of the Lancers slow start. Brandon Strausse and David Suhadolnik put some solid numbers on the board while the coaches effectively managed the clock, leading the Falcons to a four point lead going into half time. As the tide filled in the waves offered up longer rides and better scoring opportunities. The Lancers, who had home break advantage, made a good call to surf second knowing that the wave conditions would improve.

Nobody took advantage of the improving surf more than Duran Barr.

Duran, son of assistant coach and legendary pro surfer / shaper Dave Barr, surfed at a level above the others. Getting some of the longest waves of the day, Duran used his local knowledge to pick off the right waves that had maximum scoring potential. Duran ended up winning the Game for the Lancers with an outstanding wave where he put together a combination of snaps and rail turns and a reverse on the inside. In the end, Duran would take home not only the Most Radical Maneuver award but MVP as well. The Lancers will now move on to play the winner of next weeks Game between Point Loma High School and top seed San Dieguito Academy at Seaside Reef 5/12 at 3:30pm. The NSL’s High School Cup is the first step in bringing an entirely view to the sport of surfing through community and a structure people are used to.
