The Game Begins This Friday

The Game Begins
THE NATIONAL SURF LEAGUE’S ‘THE GAME’ WILL DO FOR SURFING WHAT THE NBA HAS DONE FOR BASKETBALL
‘THE GAME’ – SURFING’S REVOLUTIONARY TEAM COMPETITION FORMAT – SPONSORED BY GLOBE, HURLEY, ETNIES, OP, O’NEILL, RIPCURL, BILLABONG, QUIKSILVER, VOLCOM AND POOR SPECIMEN PRODUCTIONS PREMIERES FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1 AT 9:30 AM AT CARDIFF REEF, SD AS A FEATURED ATTRACTION IN THE ‘HANSEN’S / ROB MACHADO SURF CLASSIC’
Pro Surfer Brad Gerlach has created a new surfing competition format that will revolutionize the sport and once again put surfing in its rightful place as the original action sport. Never before has there been a surf contest that encouraged teamwork and brought together pro surfers from different leagues representing their home counties.
In a format similar to the NBA, The Game competition consists of 4 quarters with 2 heats per quarter. Each team has 8 players split into 2 squads with each player surfing once in the 1 st half & once in the 2 nd half. Each team also has a Coach that will juggle the line-ups to match his surfers’ strengths to the prevailing surf conditions. Each surfer’s best two rides per heat are counted and that score is then added to the Team total.
A scoreboard, continuous color commentary and scoring updates are provided to allow the crowd and the TV audience to follow the action and cheer on their favorite team. The team with the highest point total at the end of the game wins The Game trophy and, more importantly, bragging rights as SoCal’s top Team.
The Game has been designed to bring the excitement and spectator-friendly nature of mainstream sports to surfing. Teams will seat in dugouts directly in front of the bleachers, half-time report and surfer interviews will be broadcast to the crowd and recording artist The White Buffalo will perform the National Anthem in order to kick off The Game’s inaugural event (www.onewhitebuffalo.com).
A post-game review – NBA style – will provide replay and analysis by color commentators. A post-game media conference offers accredited media the opportunity to get first-hand interviews with players, coaches, organizers and event sponsors. (Estimated post-game media conference time 1230-1pm, Cardiff Reef, San Diego)
